Moisture absorption measurement and modelling of a cellulose acetate

Abstract With a view toward the application of highly hygroscopic polymers as humidity responsive self-actuator, evaluation real time moisture concentration in material becomes priority. In this paper, diffusion process cellulose acetate (53.3% acetylation) has been studied. Membranes (thickness within range 66–200 µm) have prepared, and absorption at room temperature different relative (RH 21–53%) monitored. An analytical model used to describe observed non-Fickian sigmoidal behavior diffusion. A relaxation factor (?) about 0.026 s ?1 coefficient (D) 3.35 × 10 –6 mm 2 /s determined. At constant temperature, saturation (C sat ) shown linear relation with humidity. The identified values ?, D C input for finite element simulation reliability simulations confirmed second set experiments.
